I was wearing the hat during a Jr. high game this past week and I'm pretty sure that I enforced this penalty right but I had some guy yelling in the stands and quoting rules that made me think twice so I thought I'd post here and see if anyone has any second opinions. During a pass play, center snaps the ball to the quarterback. While searching for a receiver, a member of the offensive line holds at the line of scrimmage. After the hold takes place and I mark the penalty, quarterback throws the ball for a 20 yard completion and the receiver is brought down at that spot. Once we kill the clock, I signal holding and the defense accepts the foul. We then march off 5 yards from the spot of the foul and replay the down. OK, I know we made a mistake only marching off 5 yards, it should have been 10, so I know I got that wrong. That was a "heat-of-the-moment" mistake. My question is, did I enforce the penalty from the correct spot? The thought that occurred to me is the end of the initial run was the spot where the quarterback passed the ball (e.g. making it a loose ball play). Should I have enforced where I did, the spot of the foul, or should I have assessed the penalty from the end of the initial run, the spot where the QB passed?

Brandon from my understanding you marked off the penalty correctly that is where you should have marked it off, except like you said it should have been for 10 yards but we all make mistakes like that from time to time.

This may sound kind of irrevelent but I commend you for asking a question about a simple holding call, even though you had the yardage wrong and you knew it.. Some of us, including myself hesitate to ask questions in fear that the uppers in our association will look down their noses at you for asking a question and making you feel stupid about asking the question in the first place,,, Keep on asking,,, there are no stupid questions,,,
